We woke to a spectacular, sunny, windless morning! After another nice delivered-to-our-room breakfast, we made our way to the ferry terminal, just one block from our B&B, for the 10:30 sailing. The YAKIMA is a pretty big boat and took on cars, trucks and passengers no where near its capacity.
It was a beautiful crossing! Great views of the islands and snow capped mountains in the distance. We arrived back in Anacortes about noon and headed off to a little town called La Conner. A few days ago we had been considering a Plan B in the event our sailing got cancelled due to wind. The question was: if we get "stuck" in Anacortes, what would we do? The young lady at the hotel desk said, "have you been to La Conner? No? Well that's what you have to do!"
La Conner is a little town, not far from Anacortes, on the Swinomish Channel. We'd check it out before we headed over to the tulip fields. Its a single main street of quaint restaurants, coffee shops and craft/souvenir shops. The length of the street features a wonderful boardwalk along the Channel with tie-ups for some pretty snazzy boats. We enjoyed our lunch on the deck at the Seafood and Prime Rib House, while watching bald eagles and ospreys! (See the impossible photo of eagle in flight!)
It was just a few miles to get over to "Tulip Town". Unfortunately, it was a bit of a bust. First of all, we were about 2 weeks early. The weather had been cold and rainy so only the early bulbs were in bloom. Secondly, apparently last fall there had been heavy rains and flooding which destroyed many acres of tulip bulbs. So, it wasn't much to see for us. There are also impressive fields of daffodils in the area. They bloom earlier than tulips so they were in full glory!
Our hotel for the night is an old Quality Inn in Mount Vernon. Decent dinner at the Blue Taco. Tomorrow on to Wenatchee.
